When should you visit the Emergency Unit?

Below is a list of various conditions that require immediate consideration.

 

Respiratory Emergencies

  • Acute airway obstruction (complete or partial blockage of the airway which prevents breathing. Caused due to swallowing or inhaling foreign objects, allergic reactions, asthma, etc.).
  • Acute asthma (breathing difficulty)
  • Acute respiratory failure (breathing difficulty)
  • Exacerbation of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)

Cardiovascular (CVS) Emergencies

  • Heart failure
  • Acute Coronary syndromes (anything that causes reduced blood flow to hurt; heart attack).
  • Myocarditis / Pericarditis (irritation /swelling of heart muscles).
  • Post-cardiac surgery complications
  • General symptoms of CVS emergencies include shortness of breath, unexplained tiredness, pain radiating to the left side, abdomen, neck, and back, feeling nausea.

    Gastrointestinal (GI) Emergencies

    • Bowel obstruction
    • Gastroenteritis
    • Vomiting/diarrhoea
    • Food poisoning
    • Hematemesis (Vomiting Blood)
    • Bleeding per rectum (Rectal bleeding)
    • Melena (dark stools with an offensive smell, maybe caused due to upper GI bleeding)
    • Hepatic failure (Liver failure)
    • An abscess (collection of pus-normally bacterial infection)
    • Acute cholecystitis (inflammation of the gall bladder, sharp pain on the upper right side of the abdomen)
    • Acute pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)

    Neurological Emergencies

    • Seizure disorders
    • Head injury
    • Cerebrovascular accident (CVA)- Stroke
    • Spinal injury
    • Acute rise of ICP (Intra-Cranial pressure)- pt. complains of headache, vomiting, less alertness, and sleepiness.
    • Cerebral hemorrhage
    • Acute pain presentation
    • General symptoms of any neurological emergencies would present with sudden onset of severe headache, loss of feeling or tingling sensations, muscle weakness, blurred vision, lack of coordination, and slurred speech. Must advise the patient to seek immediate medical help.

    Genitourinary Emergencies

    • Acute urinary obstruction (pt. says pain in the abdomen, fever, frequent urination, difficulty urinating).
    • Acute urinary retention- inability to pass urine.
    • Renal colic- pain caused when stones block the urinary tract. The patient complains of pain radiating from the lower back to the lower abdomen. Refer to Urology.
    • Hematuria (Blood in Urine).

    Genitourinary trauma

    • Torsion testes (commonly pt. says sudden severe pain and swelling of the scrotum-Males)
    • Trauma
    • Thermal injury
    • Motor vehicle accident/falls/work injuries. etc
    • Explosion injury
    • Orthopaedic fracture
    • Chemical exposure

    Obstetrics and Gynaecology

    • Precipitous Delivery (Rapid onset of childbirth labour)
    • Abortion
    • PV haemorrhage (per vaginal bleeding) – Vaginal bleeding which also includes bleeding other than non-uterine bleeding.

    Metabolic Crises

    • Hypoglycemia – low blood sugar levels
    • Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic nonketotic hyperglycemia- High Blood sugar levels
    • Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)- (high blood sugar level, low insulin, pt. complains of excessive thirst, frequent urination, mental confusion, fatigue, nausea)
    • Hypothyroidism/hyperthyroidism
